TUAW'S Daily iPad App: Pocket Informant HD

WebIS Pocket Informant is an advanced PIM that has been around for years, transitioning from the Windows Mobile platform to iOS quite nicely. The iPad version of this calendaring and task management app is particularly notable for its wonderful layout and efficient use of the entire iPad display.

One feature Pocket Informant was known for, even back in its Windows Mobile days, was its many settings and options. And, thankfully, these features are carried over to the iOS application. The settings menu on the iPad has options for General settings, Appearance, Today settings, Calendar settings, Task settings, Sync setting and Advanced settings. Under each of these headings are options to change colors, views, orientation, notifications and more. It's a field of dreams for those that like to tweak an app to their personal tastes.

Pocket Informant HD has the appearance of daily planner and can be viewed in either portrait or landscape view. In either orientation, there are tabs on the right side which lets you switch from calendar view, task view, agenda view and settings. Each section has even more options in the top bar. From this bar, you can add an event or task as well as switch from days, month or week view. You can also display information from an individual calendar and use a search box to find a specific appointment or task. Despite all these options, everything is neat, orderly and pleasing to the eye.

For those who adhere to a planning regimen, Pocket Informant HD supports Getting Things Done or Franklin Covey ABC/1-99 Prioritization of tasks. It also syncs with multiple Google calendars, iOS calendars and Toodledo. Some users may be overwhelmed by all the options and views available, but most users will be pleased by the power and flexibility of this personal information management app.

At $12.99 Pocket Informant HD is pricey, but it's worth the cost for those that rely on their calendar to help manage their busy lives.

Pegatron might outbid Foxconn for iPad 3 contract

In spite of a seeming loss, Pegatron may have landed a key deal to make the iPad 3, insiders claimed Thursday. The Taiwan contract manufacturer was said to have won a deal to ship some of the tablets alongside Apple's usual manufacturer, Foxconn (Hon Hai). The Taiwan Economic News source had most individual suppliers remaining the same....

TaskRabbit iPhone app lets you crowdsource your tasks

TaskRabbit is a unique service that lets busy people offload their tasks to those willing to do them. It costs a small fee, but you can have your groceries delivered, laundry done and dogs walked before you return home from a busy day at work.

When it launched, the service was web-based only, but TaskRabbit recently developed an iPhone app that lets you manage your tasks on the run. You can create a new task, monitor the progress of a task and even price a task using information based from the TaskRabbit service. It lets you add descriptions using a voice recording or images so the person completing your task knows exactly what to do.

It's an interesting use of modern technology that melds your mundane routine with the power of the crowd. And it's now on the iPhone.

10.7: Accessing Windows shares if files/folders do not appear in Finder

I'm experiencing a problem whereby the Windows shares I use at work mount in the Finder but don't reveal 'child of child' directories. So basically I can't see any of my working files/folders.

Here's a workaround I used in this situation:

Open Terminal, navigate to the share (once mounted) in /Volumes. Navigate to one of the child of child folders (they appear in Terminal but were empty when viewed in the Finder) and type 'open.'

This opens the folder in the Finder revealing the files/folders that were invisible before. In addition, you can now navigate 'up' in the Finder to see the previously hidden parent directory.

[crarko adds: I haven't tested this one.]

Apple officially ousts Samsung, Nokia as tops in smartphones

Apple achieved a goal it has likely been aiming to reach for four years on Friday as Strategy Analytics confirmed Apple was now the largest smartphone maker in the world. Its 20.34 million iPhones in spring gave it the lead with 18.5 percent of the market. Samsung, which confirmed just Friday that it shipped 19.2 million smartphones, grew rapidly but was denied the lead at 17.5 percent share....

New iOS app augments reality by replacing ads with art

An anti-advertising group called Public Ad Campaign is developing an augmented-reality app for iOS devices that, when finished, should replace billboard and poster ads with artwork or advertising parodies in the iDevice's viewfinder, PC World reports. For example, pointing an iPhone at a billboard for the new movie Cowboys and Aliens would replace the sign with a Marlboro ad parody....

PC makers struggling to match MacBook Air pricing ahead of Ultrabook launches

Windows-based PC makers looking to challenge Apple's extremely successful line of ultra-lightweight MacBook Airs with designs based on Intel's "Ultrabook" platform are losing hope that they'll be able to do so and still turn a profit on sales of the notebooks any time this year.

10.7: Make Dashboard translucent again

Lion by default opens the Dashboard as its own space, which means you can't see the desktop 'through' it like you could in 10.6. You can return the Dashboard to its former transparent splendor by telling Mission Control to not open the Dashboard as a space.

To return the Dashboard to its pre-Lion behavior:
  • Open System Preferences.
  • Click the Mission Control panel.
  • Un-select the 'Show dashboard as a space' check box.
  • Close the System Preferences.
Not only will the Dashboard return to displaying as an overlay above the desk, but as a bonus, you will have back the cool 'ripple' effect when adding new widgets.

[crarko adds: This is one of those things that's only obvious if you've looked for it. I don't use Dashboard much, but if you do, and liked the old way better, here you go.]

10.7: FileMaker Pro Advanced 11 Date fields showing Asian Characters.

After upgrading to Lion, Many of my databases would no longer show dates that were in the default format. Instead they showed Asian characters for the year. This is despite an early post on Apple's compatibility site that FMP 11 did not have that problem. Only Pre 11. But it still does. The solution can be tedious for large FMP systems with lots of windows with many date fields but for now this is the only solution. A FileMaker update which corrects this is promised for August.

You must go to each date field, or select several at once, and change them to a CUSTOM date format. You can make the custom format the exact same as the default, and it will still correct the problem. If you select several date fields at once to change their format, make sure the only thing you change is the format. (A good hint in itself.)

[crarko adds: Yes, it's obscure, but there are a lot of FileMaker users out there. Let is know if this works.]
