Starbucks app update perks up coffee customers

MyStarbucks is no more. Starbucks rolled out version 2 of its official app today, combining the functions of myStarbucks and Starbucks Card Mobile into a single program.

The new app has a redesigned interface with the company's new logo. Performance is much faster and having the Starbucks Card capabilities added to the app makes sense since it's ridiculously easy to pay for your coffee with your iPhone and there's really no need to have a separate app for this. Mobile payments also were expanded to Starbucks locations in Safeway.

You can now send eGifts, gifting Starbucks credit to a lucky receipent. It'll go straight to the person's email or Facebook and a QR scanner was added. It retains the other features from the older app such as customizing and viewing the nutrition stats for your drinks, Starbucks Rewards, a geolocation feature, view available job openings and more

Starbucks is a free download. Starbucks Card Mobile is still a standalone app, but I expect it'll go away soon.

Lab tests: Thunderbolt RAID blows away FireWire 800 The first Thunderbolt-based RAID array has finally arrived, and Macworld Lab has some test results for Promise's Pegasus R6 system. As expected, the R6 is pretty darn fast -- and not just by a few measly megabytes per second.

iPad 2 Stars in Vacation Videos

USA Today?s Jefferson Graham describes how he was able to capture and edit on-the-go travel videos in New Zealand using iPad 2 and the iMovie app, then instantly demo his movies on the ?nearly 10-inch sexy screen.? Writes Graham: ?Most people never get around to editing their videos. So having easy-to-obtain software on a device that lets you edit anywhere, like the iPad, will, hopefully, result in more polished videos.?

10.6: Create global hotkeys to control Google Music playback

Snow Leopard only hintI've been enjoying the Google Music Beta, but I hated having to go to my Web browser, to the Google Music tab, and click the button. So, I wrote some services to create global hotkeys to play/pause, skip forward/back, and toggle shuffle.

To create a service, open Automator. When asked to choose a template, select Service. Our service will have only one block: Run AppleScript. Type that into the search bar at the top left and drag the Run AppleScript item to the project area on the right.
Replace the code in the box already with this: on run tell application "Google Chrome" set allWins to every window set allTabs to {} repeat with currWin in allWins se ...

Postbox 2.5 out with new Mac theme, 64-bit mode

Postbox is a favored alternate email client among the TUAW staff and version 2.5 was just released with a number of updates.

This includes Postbox now running in 64-bit mode along with a new theme, interface and icon set that does much to make it look similar to the built-in Mail app, but retain Postbox's distinct style. Double-row vertical thread view is now supported along with a streamlined message view. In addition to all of this is a major price reduction. When Postbox 2 was released, it was US$39.95. It's now $19.95 with upgrades from Postbox 1 being $14.95.

Postbox 2.5 requires OS X 10.6 and higher and is currently available through Postbox's site. The 2.5 version will be available via the Mac App Store soon.

Pogue notes that the Our Choice app updates Gore?s 2009 best-selling book about solving Earth?s climate crisis and that ?the real magic? is in the visual elements, which include more than 400 pages of interactive photos, graphics, and video. New Sony VAIO Z: lighter than MacBook Air, packs Thunderbolt

Sony chose Europe as the first venue to unveil a redesigned VAIO Z. The new system is now more consciously pitched as a MacBook Air equivalent and moves both the optical drive and even dedicated graphics to an external box, the Power Media Dock. The new PC is the first non-Mac to use Thunderbolt, albeit not in Mini DisplayPort form, and uses the high-speed cable to handle not just Blu-ray or DVD but AMD Radeon HD 6650M video, three USB ports, Ethernet, 3D-capable HDMI, and VGA....

iPhone 5 production to begin in August

Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty claims Apple will begin production of the iPhone 5 in the second half of August and ramp up progressively through the rest of the year. Using information obtained from Taiwanese sources, Huberty also writes in a recent research note that the iPhone 5 will go on sale in September, a date that coincides with earlier leaks.

The iPhone 5 will be a big seller for Apple and the Morgan Stanley analyst keeps her yearly sales estimate of 72 million units. Third quarter sales may drop due to the September arrival of the iPhone 5, but an increase in sales during the fourth quarter will make up for any third quarter lag. Huberty also believes that Apple is working on a lower-priced iPhone and an Apple-branded TV. Both of these rumors have floated around for a while and have yet to come to fruition.

AirPlay and Thunderbolt May Be Limited to High-End Devices to Start

Earlier today, we noted that LaCie is preparing to roll out its first Thunderbolt-enabled Little Big Disk external hard drives, although the initial models will be limited to higher-end SSD-based devices.

iLounge now reports that slow roll-out of Thunderbolt and the lack of consumer-based options may be due to high pricing for incorporating the technology, an issue that appears to also be affecting third-party peripherals compatible with Apple's AirPlay streaming technology. According to the report, the inclusion of Thunderbolt or AirPlay compatibility can add as much as $100 to the price of these devices, limiting their ability to address mainstream consumer markets.
Our sources have described the AirPlay technologies as considerably more expensive to incorporate than Apple's standard docking Made for iPod/iPhone/iPad Dock Connectors, and noted that Apple is very heavily pushing developers to adopt the wireless technologies despite the costs involved.

We similarly have learned that the price of the components required to add a Thunderbolt port to an external hard drive is roughly equal to the cost of a low-end hard drive itself, a high cost that one developer has suggested will limit Thunderbolt's near-term use to products aimed at the professional market.
For the time being, announced Thunderbolt products do seem to be coming in at price points above those typically within range of mainstream consumers, as evidenced by Promise's 8 TB Pegasus RAID R4, which briefly appeared on Apple's store priced at $1399.95 before being pulled. That price is only $100 more than for Promise's current 8 TB RAID offering, but it remains to be seen just how quickly Thunderbolt will be able to make its way into more mainstream products.

iLounge suggests that there may at least be some hope for price drops for AirPlay devices in the relatively near future, noting that Philips earlier this week debuted AirPlay-compatible speaker systems with price tags as low as $229, a new floor in what has until now seen the feature primarily limited to higher-end receivers.

The New MacBook Pro: The Last Notebook You?ll Ever Need

Noting that the new 15- and 17-inch quad-core MacBook Pro models deliver ?twice the CPU performance of Core 2 Duo, three times the graphics performance of the previous generation?s Nvidia GeForce GT 330M, and more than ten times the external I/O bandwidth of 800MHz FireWire,? InfoWorld reviewer Tom Yager writes, ?This brand of magic can?t be conjured by Apple?s competitors.? He adds: ?If, in all of this, you can?t see a reason to upgrade your notebook, maybe I can bring the point home: This might be the last notebook computer you?ll ever need or want.?

Organize iPhone folders by icon

I use iPhone folders, but I've always had trouble finding apps. Even if I can remember the name I picked for a group of apps, or which apps I decided to place in that group, I often can't read the folder names. Isn't that what icons are for?

There are no icons for folders, but I realized that I had one favorite of each category: a favorite game, photo utility, book utility, and so on. First I organized all my folders by group, including that favorite app inside the folder. Then I organized the folders how I wanted them in a window. Finally, I pulled the single most used app from each folder and placed it to the left of the folder. Now I visually use the icon of the representative app for the contents of the folder to the right, as if to say: Favorite Music App -- Other Music Apps.

Now I can find things in a snap.

[crarko adds: I've been using something similar to this method for some time myself. It's much easier to arrange things on the iPad whe ...

A reminder

Just a quick reminder; the focus area for this month's Hints contest is 'Working with Windows,' which can involve all sorts of tips for working between a Mac and Windows PC's.

In July, when Mac OS X Lion is released, we will of course start publishing hints of all sorts about it. My one request is to make sure that hints are tested with the release version of 10.7, in case something has changed from the beta.

I'm going to try to set up a 10.6/10.7 dual boot system upon release for compatibility testing, but the presumed lack of Rosetta support in Lion may delay my full adoption, and I may just wind up getting a new Mac to run it on full time. I think I'll be putting together a poll to find out what people are planning to do for upgrade strategies.
